"The Phone is Mightier than the Sword": By ElSuper

In ancient times and the dark ages, if you wanted to kill someone, you
needed a sword. Or an axe,
or club, some sort of melee weapon. To kill from a distance required
uncommon skill with a bow.
Weaponry has since evolved into modern projectile weaponry, crossbows
to muskets to rifles to
automatic weapons, each easier to kill with than the last.
When you have to kill someone in hand to hand combat, it takes a rare
sort of coldness and/or
hatred. You have to see the look on their face as you drive cold steel
into them, and watch the
life fade from their eyes. The modern infantryman killing from a
distance of 30 meters sees
perhaps a puff of dust, a mist of blood as his bullets penetrate his
adversary's torso, and the
collapsed heap thereafter of his foe's body. The modern sniper knows
his quarry even more
impersonally, only a shape in a scope, the endpoint of his barrel's
line of sight.
Even more impersonally can a voter say that a criminal whom they have
never met, and know only
through our travesty of a media, deserves to be executed. Or that a
country that they cannot
identify on a map deserves to be bombed for reasons as clear as
"they've got it comin'." A man in
a white house, at the turn of a couple keys and the press of a button,
can end life on earth.
In short, killing has gotten far easier, both in mechanics, and in
relieving killers of any sense
of personal responsibility.
The same is true in communication.
In the olden days, when you had a piece of bad news for someone, you
had to tell them in person.
You had to look at their face as the news sank in like so much cold
steel into their gut.
Now there is are telephones. You don't have to see the person you hurt.
And if you don't like how
they react, or you can't stand the pain and sorrow in their voice, you
can just hang up, and
everything will be honky-dory. This is the equivalent of the modern
rifleman, aware only of the
end result, the death of his foe, and not of the pain caused by bullets
tearing through flesh.
Even worse is the internet. Now you need not see nor hear their pain.
Words of great emotional
import are now no more than data entered on a keyboard, transmitted as
1's and 0's instantaneously
to their destination, to appear on a screen in someother place where
you are not. The person you
are giving bad news to exists to you, for the moment, as nothing more
than a screenname and the
text that they transmit to you. This is the president who presses the
button to launch missiles
that will kill millions of people whom he has never nor will never see,
who, safe in the comfort
of his bunker, knows that he has done the right thing.
It has become easier to hurt than ever before, whether physically or
psychologically, and the
degree of personal responsibility that people must face has grown too
small. This is one of many
things wrong with the world, that empathy is everyday erased more from
the human experience.

People Suck! Vol.1

I've been waiting to start this "People Suck" series for a while now. My good friends (you know who you are) told me it was too much for one post. So, the series of reasons people suck begins now. (ElSuper will follow with his rant. Much to my dismay, he's become a Berkeley hippie) Today I was sent to pick up some work for my company. I had to back the flatbed into a warehouse to load. During that time, one of the guys there found a mouse in a glue trap, it was still alive!  He proceeded to drown it in a glass of water. I was disgusted too say the least. I've been flashing on that on and off all day. What a scumbag! People suck! Not only for that...but more. Tune in next week for "People Suck: Vol#2."
